It’s looking like another great State Final as Catholic Memorial and Divine Savior Holy Angels are dominating their respective divisions. Here are the results from week four.
Oak Creek - 29 v Vernon – 25
Although Vernon officially forfeited to Oak Creek in their league match on Saturday, the Harlequins filled out their side with Oak Creek players and both teams played a spirited 60-minute match that ended in a close, 29-25 victory for Oak Creek.
Vernon, led by WI U19 All-Stars Monique Foster and Mercedes Champlin, out-rucked Oak Creek for most of the match, stealing many balls from the Knights and making it difficult for Oak Creek to build an attacking rhythm. Oak Creek was able to put some tries up, however, thanks to long runs by Katie Flagge, Megan Bird and Lauren Buchholz. Flankers Meghan Galaszewski and Gabby Larson contributed additional scores for the Knights, with Tehya Herbert and Abby Larch each adding a conversion. Vernon was able to spread the ball wide in their backline attacks, and several Harlequin forwards had thundering runs through the Oak Creek defense. Both teams showed solid tackling throughout the match.
CHM – 67 v DSHA JV - 0
Catholic Memorial hit its stride against a young but Divine Savior JV team. DSHA JV played well and was competitive but CMH’s experience and athleticism was too much for them. Memorial senior Ashley Ziegler was outstanding in the winning effort with her defense and support play and chipped in a try. CMH was led in scoring by underclassmen Kate Chapman, Allison Koenig, Tatum Straw, and Stephanie Wilson. CMH has a strong Senior class and they are complimented by four or five rookies in the starting lineup who are excellent athletes. They have more depth than in recent years and it looks like the Waukesha Tag program started by Joe Cunningham (WS Harlequins) is paying off for them.
DSHA Varsity – 68 v Brookfield Varsity - 0
If there ever was any doubt about how strong Divine Savior would be after losing 22 Seniors from last year’s team those doubts were put to rest when DSHA dominated previously unbeaten Brookfield. DSHA came out on fire and Brookfield was flat as DSHA raced to a 46-0 half-time lead. The Dashers backline, led by WI U19 Fullback Meg Walker, played outstanding defense and were crisp on offense. The Dashers forwards, led by WI U19 flankers Sarah Clarke and Maeve Hanley dominated the rucks and possession. Brookfield Coach Neil Grinjes stated, “We were hopeful we could give DSHA a good game but our team came out flat. We were passive and didn’t do a good job at the breakdown which allowed DS to have 90% of the possession. We’re fortunate to have such high quality teams as DSHA and CMH in our league as it gives us something to shoot for.”
Fond du Lac – 27 v Knightmares (formerly Kettle Moraine) – 19
2nd year Coach Megan Kilpatrick is in the middle of rebuilding the Knightmares program after losing 8 Seniors last year and took the field against Fond du Lac with 13 players. Despite playing two players down they were able to give Fond du Lac a good game. The Knightmares are led by Flyhalf Zoe Bierce and the Center combination of Morgan Saenz and WI U19 Emily Becker. Fond du Lac was led by WI U19 Props Liz Stanchfield and Emma Conrad and WI U19 Flyhalf Alaina Passarella.
Pulaski – 41 v Muskego – 15
1st year program Pulaski continued their impressive inaugural campaign with a 41-15 win over Muskego. Emily Morris and Holly Shupbach each scored two tries while Savannah Davies and Cassi McQuillan eached dotted down for the Flyers. Gaby Russel was 3 of 7 on conversions.
