Championship: CMH – 24 v. DSHA 10
DSHA and Catholic Memorial games are always a pleasure to watch. Both teams are extremely well coached and well disciplined. Their forwards excel at controlling possession and poaching the ball. Both teams have talented backlines with exceptional players in Allison Koenig (#10) and Meg Walker (#15). The games are usually close affairs until one team pulls away in the last 15 minutes of the match. Up until this year that team has been DSHA.
The game started with CMH receiving the kick-off. They dominated possession in the DSHA half
until Senior Prop Kelsie Gustafson scored a try on a 10 meter punch. Kelsie is a 3 year starter and ran with power and authority all night. She broke off several 20-30 meter runs throughout the game. The unconverted try put CMH in front 5-0.
After the score DS regrouped and put CMH under severe pressure. CMH was throwing the ball around and not playing with their usual poise. Tara Sweeney dotted down and Meg Walker converted the try to make the game 7-5 in DSHA’s favor.
CMH regrouped and the rest of the half was fairly even, with both teams having their moments. With about 8 min left in the half Allison Koenig broke free and touched down and Meaghan Schmitt converted the try, making the score 12-7 CMH.
With about 5 minutes to go CMH’s Koenig picked up a loose ball in the middle of the field at the DS 22 meter line and beat the DS defensive line to the corner for an apparent try. The try was called back because of obstruction on CMH. Late in the half CMH was penalized and Meg Walker made them pay with a 30 meter penalty goal to make the half-time score 12-10.
For the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half DSHA put tremendous pressure on the CMH defense. Halfway through the second half the game looked like either team could win. Then CMH won a lineout at midfield and did a forward crash. The ball was recycled out to the wing a couple of times to move the ball to the 30 meter line. On the 4th phase the ball found its way into Koenig’s hands and she cut through the middle of the DSHA defense for a 35 meter try. Meaghan Schmitt made the all-important conversion to make it a two score lead at 19-10. This seemed to take the wind out of DSHA’ sails as CMH had the majority of possession moving forward. Senior Captain Elle Metz scored the final try in injury time to make the score 24-10.
Although she didn’t score, Senior back Lizzie Walicki came up huge for CMH, both on offense continuously making the gain line and on defense with some clean hard tackles. The CMH backline did a good job of containing a very dynamic DSHA backline. For the most part DSHA did the same with a great CMH backline. Like always the difference in the game was one or two plays.
Liz Walicki was named CMH player of the match and Genevieve Ruesch (Scrumhalf) was named DSHA player of the match.
We would like to thank the Referees. They were top notch at this tournament and the coaches and players appreciate the great work that you do.

3rd Place: Brookfield Bruisers – 22 v. Pulaski Fliers – 0
Our whole league has been impressed with what Pulaski has accomplished in their first year having a girls program. They have a fit, mobile team that excels at a forward focused offensive attack. The Bruisers were hoping to get the ball out wide to their WI U19 players (Outside Center Aiyanna Primer, Wings Abby Andler and Sam Bartz-Kolp and Fullback Areliz Rivera.
The 1st 20 minutes of the game were fairly even, with the Bruisers doing a good job of stripping ball from the Pulaski forwards and stealing their lineouts but with Pulaski doing a great job of poaching Brookfield’s rucks. With 5 minutes to go before half-time Outside Center Aiyanna Primer made a nice line-break to the 5 meter line before feeding Wing Abby Andler for the 1st try of the game. The half ended with the Bruisers on top 5-0.
The 2nd half played out similar to the 1st half with both teams doing a good job of stealing possession from the other team. 10 minutes into the half Wing Abby Andler got around the Pulaski defense for a 40 meter try to put the Bruisers up 10-0. With 10 minutes to go Scrumhalf Sam Jensen picked up the ball from a scrum and raced 25 meters for a score. The converted try made the score 17-0. Aiyanna Primer finished the scoring for Brookfield with a 30 meter score in injury time to make the final score 22-0.
Flanker Nicky Lehto was named player of the match for Brookfield for her lineout steals and aggressive defense. Sydney Kraning (Prop) was player of the match for Pulaski.
5th Place: Oak Creek Knights - 56 v. Appleton Dragons - 5
Oak Creek and Appleton faced off Sunday in the 5th place match. Appleton's blitz defense stuffed Oak Creek's forward attack throughout the game; the Dragons' pack and the interior of their backline made many tackles behind the Knights' gain line. Eventually Oak Creek's backs were able to get the ball out wide during the later phases in each possession, several of which converted were converted into long tries; Megan Bird found the goal four times, and additional tries were contributed by backs Tehya Herbert, Lauren Buchholz, Erin Coburn, and forwards Izzy Blawat, Amanda Delikat and Meghan Galaszewski. Appleton did a fine job of poaching balls and added a late try on a tough run by Jordyn Gaurke, wing. Both teams tackled hard throughout the match.
Kaitlyn Schoepel, inside center, won player of the match for Appleton and Tehya Herbert was player of the match for Oak Creek.
7th Place: Fond du Lac Sirens – 44 v. DSHA JV – 5
Fond du Lac proved too much for a young DSHA JV team that has been steadily improving all season. DSHA held out their top 4 players from the JV squad and placed them on the reserve list for the Championship game. Outside Center Savanna Roeder scored 3 tries for the Sirens and was continuously making line-breaks. Elizabeth Stanchfield, SS Schettle, Annakah Lynch, Alaina Passarella and Lexi Engelhardt also dotted down for Fondy. Brittany Willet added two conversions.
