UW Madison traveled to the Gun Club field on the Lakefront last Saturday to take on UW Milwaukee in a Women's Collegiate D1 game. UW Madison had 7 starters from our league and UW Milwaukee had 8. In a well played match UW Madison came out on top 33-22.
The game opened up with UW Madison Prop Lizzie Bellis (Catholic Memorial) scoring in the corner on a 15 meter run. She missed her own conversion to make the score 5-0. 10 minutes later UW Milwaukee flyhalf Erika Winner (Menomonee Falls) took a ball out of a ruck weak side and scampered 50 meters for a try. Winner stood out in the game directing a dangerous UW Milwaukee back-line. Lacey Engle converted the try for a 7-5 lead.
The game went back and forth with UW Madison's strong forward pack making runs up the field while UW Milwaukee's backfield would quickly gain back ground. UW Madison Fullback, Jenny Glaser, who was dynamic with ball in hand playing from the Fullback position, raced for a 50 meter try to put UW Madison up 12-7. UW Madison Scrumhalf Talyor Rozman (Kettle Moraine) and wing Liz "Lava" Vaala scored tries to push the score to 26-7 with 10 minutes to go in the 1st half. Just before half-time Samantha Dunn (Vernon) scored a try to close the gap to 26-12 at intermission.
The 2nd half was even for the 1st 20 minutes until Flanker Lizzie Jacobson (Catholic Memorial) scooped up a loose ball and made a run before off-loading to wing Mary Beidlingmaier (Catholic Memorial) for a 40 meter try to close the gap to 26-17. With 10 minutes left in the game UW Madison's Lizzie Bellis, who moved from Prop to Inside Center, cut inside and beat the Fullback for a 25 meter try. Bellis made her 4th conversion in 5 attempts to make the score 33-17. UW Milwaukee's Olivia Oddis (Oak Creek) finished the scoring near the end of the game for a final score of 33-22. Overall it was an evenly played match and well played by both teams.
